9.8.18- Natural Dye Sampler

65.00

Saturday, September 8, 2018

12:00 PM - 3:00 PM CST

Materials : All yarn, fabric, and dyes are provided.

Food: A light sampling of snack items + water/tea will be available throughout the workshop, but please feel free to bring your own water bottle.

Join us for a laid back afternoon experimenting with local color. This workshop will be taught in collaboration with Robin Verson of Hill and Hollow Farm. We are delighted to team up and offer an opportunity to learn how to add color to cloth + yarn using locally foraged natural dyes + homegrown indigo from Robin’s farm in Kentucky.

We will have raw dye materials on hand as well as pre-prepared vats for a comparison on how time plays a large factor in this ancient artform. A variety of sample swatches [wool, alpaca, cotton, linen, silk, hemp] will be pulled from the vats to demonstrate how the dye reacts differently on protein vs. cellulose fiber.

We will also share tips on fabric and fiber sourcing, how to stretch your dye vats, and the best times of the year to be on the lookout for local dye materials.

During this workshop participants will have the opportunity to experiment with various folding techniques (Shibori), over-dyeing, and block printing with natural pigments. This is a less structured class than my Introduction to Natural Dye Workshop and will be more focused on creative exploration with a variety of different samples on display for inspiration.

If you have a small skein of yarn / swatch of fabric that you think is a good candidate for the dye vat, please feel free to bring it along to use as an example in our discussion.

The location for this workshop is in the freshly built lean-to on the barn. Weather Permitting, we will be working over an open fire, alongside a humble herd of curious critters.

**If Mother Nature has other plans in mind, we will heat our vats using hot plates while enjoying the rain on the tin roof.

Please join us as we continue to add to the rich history of this gathering space while enjoying the company of like minds and fresh ideas.

**Wear clothing you don't mind to get dirty + smelling like a campfire. We will be spending a majority of the time outside.

(Space is limited to 12 participants)

* All are welcome, no previous experience is necessary.
