Reunion Yarn Co. : Sweater Unraveling 101

100.00

Saturday January 14, 2017

11:00 AM - 3:00 PM CST

Location: Fiber Farm,  Tracy City, TN

Lunch: Provided (Chicken Salad Sandwiches + Sides)

Materials : Please bring your own seam ripper / sharp pointed scissors

*Participants are encouraged to bring a bundle of sweaters they wish to unravel, however keep in mind they may not all meet the criteria required to be unraveled.  Extra sweaters will be made available to all participants in the event they did not bring any sweaters, or if the ones they did bring are not usable*

Come learn how to deconstruct and unravel old or thrifted sweaters for their yarn!

This class will be led by Emily Felix from Reunion Yarn Co., a Chattanooga-based yarn company that reclaims and re-processes yarn from sweaters.

We will start by discussing the types of sweater construction that can and cannot be unraveled, with many physical examples of what does and doesn't work.

We will then cover the entire process of de-seaming, finding the starting point, and unraveling yarn in the most efficient way.

You will learn first-hand about why recycled fiber is a better option than buying new yarn and expert tips on maximizing the amount of yarn you can reclaim.  You will also be introduced to custom machines developed and manufactured locally by Reunion Yarn Co. that help facilitate the unraveling process.

By the end of the class, you will have a deeper understanding of the steps required to unravel your own yarn for knitting, crocheting, weaving, and other fiber arts.

All participants may take home as many skeins of unraveled yarn as they are able to process during the workshop.  You will also take home the knowledge to continue the process on your own time.

(At the end of the workshop, everyone is invited to take a brief tour of the farm and meet the furry menagerie.)

If you have any questions about this workshop, please feel free to email me at kacie@fiberfarm.com.

The location for this workshop is in the front room of the farmhouse, originally built in 1860. Please join us as we continue to add to the rich history of this gathering space while enjoying the company of like minds and a warm fire.
